“Not Today, Sir”

In our occasional paper “‘Not Today Sir’,” published at the Center for Security Policy, we wrote:

Now-retired U.S. Air Force Brigadier General James R. McCarthy … of the Strategic Air Command recalled in a documentary:

There was a story that used to be told. There was a general and he would go to the Russian premier and the question was “Is today the day we can take on the United States and we can come out ahead?” The general would say “not today sir.” And our job [at SAC] was to make sure that every day that was his answer.

Well, that day has already come — — and gone.

A Soviet ballistic submarine-launched preemptive nuclear strike against Naval Base Pearl Harbor, Honolulu, Hawaii, United States was abruptly stopped mid-launch on March 8, 1968, unbeknownst to the American people.

That March 8, 1968 Union of Soviet Socialist Republics’ (USSR) attack on America was dramatically averted with the mysterious destruction and sinking of Soviet Golf II-class diesel electric ballistic missile submarine K-129.

Fortunately for America, the Soviets’ 1968 nuclear missile launch attempt spectacularly failed as Moscow’s K-129 mysteriously sank 17,000 feet to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean with 98 Soviet hands aboard and her nuclear-armed missiles already protruding K-129’s launch tubes number one and two.

That unprovoked, surprise Soviet missile launch operation against America was underway during the critical seconds before K-129 suddenly sank, newly-revealed evidence proves.

After Soviet Navy admirals back in Russia realized that K-129 was missing, the Soviet Navy launched a massive search operation around K-129’s North Pacific Ocean patrol box, where K-129 was supposedly ordered to remain on station.

After realizing that K-129 had vanished, the Soviet government made an unfounded claim that U.S. Navy submarine USS Swordfish (SSN-579) had rammed into K-129 and sank her. Had that been the case, that US Navy submarine USS Swordfish would have been credited with stopping a nuclear war, saving the US Navy fleet in Pearl Harbor, and saving the lives of three quarters of a million American military personnel and civilians living in Honolulu.

On March 17, 1968, USS Swordfish had pulled into the U.S. Navy base in Yokosuko, Japan for emergency repairs on a bent periscope. The U.S. Navy, however, maintains that USS Swordfish was damaged by ice in the Sea of Japan and was nowhere near K-129 on the day she sank.

US Intelligence Personnel Aboard A US Navy Submarine Quietly Located The Wreck Of K-129 In 1968 And Collected Still-Classified Top Secret Photographs Showing Two Of Doomed K-129’s Missile Tubes Open “With A Wrecked Missile Kind Of Hanging Out Top”; Over Half A Century Later, Some Of Those Classified Photos Were Leaked And Presented In The 2021 Documentary “The Real Hunt For Red October”

Still-top secret classified undersea photographic evidence, withheld for over half a century by the U.S. government, the U.S. Navy, and the CIA, but recently leaked and subsequently revealed to the American people and the world in the riveting 2021 documentary The Real Hunt for Red October, confirmed what had, until recently, only been an unproven theory that K-129 went rogue and attempted a nuclear strike on Pearl Harbor.

In a terrifyingly close call that could have thrust America into World War III, the Soviets’ botched 1968 submarine attack failed when doomed Soviet submarine K-129 mysteriously sank with all 98 hands lost, during her attempted nuclear strike operation against Pearl Harbor.

U.S. Navy submarine USS Halibut (SSGN-587), while managing to avoid sinking by Soviet naval forces and relying on triangulated acoustic data collected by U.S. Air Force AFTAC sites and the U.S. Navy’s SOSUS (Sound Surveillance System), methodically sailed along a grid pattern above the deep sea floor of the Pacific Ocean, patiently hunting for the wreck of K-129.

Eventually, USS Halibut covertly located and extensively photographed K-129’s watery grave. The wreck of K-129 was located about 350 miles north northwest of Pearl Harbor, hundreds of miles away from where the Soviet Navy had been fruitlessly searching for their lost submarine.

Haunting undersea images, secretly collected by U.S. intelligence personnel embedded aboard U.S. navy submarine USS Halibut (SSGN-587), revealed that at the precise moment Soviet submarine K-129 sank, she was in the midst of ballistic missile launch operations intended to inflict a devastating nuclear strike against U.S. Naval Base Pearl Harbor and the United States.

USS Halibut’s secret photographs of now-wrecked K-129 attempting a nuclear strike against Pearl Harbor were hand delivered to the White House and then-President Lyndon B. Johnson.

The CIA, which was secretly tasked with bringing up the K-129 wreckage from the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, withheld from the American people the U.S. Navy’s shocking discovery that the Soviets had attempted a submarine-launched nuclear strike against Pearl Harbor

Secret CIA undersea photos revealed in the 2021 documentary The Real Hunt For Red October showing the wreck of Soviet ballistic missile submarine K-129, which sank on March 8, 1968 to a depth of 17,000 feet in Pacific Ocean waters approximately 350 miles north northwest Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, appear to confirm that the Russian submarine attempted a nuclear strike against Pearl Harbor during the height of the Vietnam War. This would have escalated America’s proxy war in Vietnam against the Soviets and China into a full-blown nuclear war.

Kenneth Sewell and Clint Richmond, in their 2006 book Red Star Rogue: The Untold Story of a Soviet Submarine’s Nuclear Strike Attempt on the U.S., floated the theory that KGB elements linked to brutal KGB chairman Yuri Andropov and Stalin protege Mikhail Suslov, who joined the Bolsheviks in 1921, secretly planned a 1968 mutiny of Soviet ballistic missile submarine K-129 in a diabolical armageddon plot to launch a nuclear strike on the U.S. Navy base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, according to their book Red Star Rogue.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is a life-long admirer of notorious KGB boss Andropov.

The CIA’s deep ocean images of K-129, which remain classified more than a half century after the Russian Golf II class diesel electric ballistic missile submarine sank to the bottom of the Pacific Ocean, reveal two ballistic missiles armed with nuclear warheads lying on their sides, partially ejected from K-129’s two open missile tubes. Those photos also show K-129’s third missile tube door still closed.

U.S. Secretary of the Navy John Lehman (1981 – 1987) kept secret what the U.S. Navy, U.S. Naval intelligence, and the CIA knew about K-129.

Secretary of the Navy John Lehman, 1982

However, Lehman brought in “insurance salesman” Tom Clancy to alert the American people to the existential threat posed by Soviet ballistic missile submarines armed with nuclear weapons.

Clancy wrote his bestselling debut novel “The Hunter for Red October,” which ended up in the hands of President Reagan aboard Air Force One. First published on October 1, 1984, Clancy’s book was adapted into the now-legendary motion picture “The Hunt for Red October,” a spectacular box office success starring Sean Connery as Captain Marko Ramius, Commanding Officer of Soviet Typhoon-class ballistic submarine Red October and Alec Baldwin as CIA officer Jack Ryan. No one could figure out how Clancy knew so much about the secret cat-and-mouse world of submarine warfare.

According to the 2021 documentary The Real Hunt for Red October:

NARRATOR:

Far from giving away secrets, however, some now believe The Hunt for Red October was part of a CIA plot to divert attention from an event that almost triggered a nuclear war.

KENNETH SEWELL

US Navy Nuclear Submarine Engineer

Author, Red Star Rogue: The Untold Story of a Soviet Submarine’s Nuclear Strike Attempt on the U.S.:

The film Hunt for Red October was the perfect story to maintain our way of life and protect us from our enemies.

NARRATOR:

More than that, based on recently-uncovered top secret information, it can now be revealed for the first time that The Hunt for Red October actually plays a key roll in the downfall of Soviet communism. But what is the shocking secret story behind it, and why has it been kept from the public until now?…

…As with the Red October submarine sailed by Sean Connery, K-129 is armed with ballistic nuclear missiles capable of destroying entire cities…

JOSH DEAN

Author, The Taking of K-129: How the CIA Used Howard Hughes to Steal a Russian Sub in the Most Daring Covert Operation in History

[On the morning of March 8, 1968] The submarine [K-129] was supposed to surface for a routine signal to say “Hey, everything’s going fine. And it didn’t. It just vanished.

NARRATOR:

In an eerie parallel with Clancy’s The Hunt for Red October, the Soviet Navy doesn’t know where K-129 is. Has it sunk? Has it suffered a malfunction? Or is it something more sinister? Has it, like the Red October, gone rogue?

KENNETH SEWELL:

What few people realize is that K-129 was on the verge of starting a nuclear war.

NARRATOR:

    1. Somewhere in the North Pacific, Soviet submarine K-129, a seven million pound Golf II submarine, armed with three nuclear missiles and 98 souls aboard, simply disappears, without a trace. It is only now, over 50 years later, that the shocking secrets behind it can finally be revealed. But if this is the case, how is it possible, as some now believe, that Tom Clancy’s 1983 runaway best seller The Hunt for Red October and the film based on it appear to be inspired by this material?…

…The events Tom Clancy wrote about in the 1980s remain classified as some of the Cold War’s most guarded secrets. So, where did he get his information? Was Tom Clancy who he said he was, an insurance agent who got lucky? Or a secret agent, someone with connections to people on the inside…

JOHN LEHMAN

Former Secretary of the Navy (1981 – 1987)

Tom used to love to hang around the Navy, and he particularly used to spend time in Annapolis and other naval sectors. And he would listen and ask questions, and pretty soon he was able to piece together a lot of the key realities of the undersea tactics and technology.

NARRATOR:

…Then how did Clancy get this information? And is The Hunt for Red October more than just a technically-accurate submarine drama? Is it also, as some now believe, part of a secret history that has its roots in the K-129 mystery? Was it written both to disguise how close the world came to nuclear annihilation and ultimately to help America win the Cold War?…

…Then, on August 20, 1968, four and a half months after it [K-129] goes missing, the photo technician [aboard submarine USS Halibut] finally sees something he recognizes.

JOSH DEAN:

Then, you know, suddenly it’s like “Oh my God, we found it!” And it’s in pretty good shape. You know, it doesn’t look like a submarine sitting in port, but it also doesn’t look like a submarine that’s been crushed like a tin can.

NARRATOR:

[Chief Scientist of the Special Projects Office of the United States Navy Dr. John P.] Craven’s team sets to work photographing the wreck from every possible angle. In total, 32,000 pictures are taken on the mission. To this day, not one of them has been declassified. But a few have leaked.

JOSH DEAN:

I’ve seen the images. They’re remarkably clear. They’re taken at three miles under the ocean in 1968. Very clear.

NARRATOR:

Even at first glance, they offer tantalizing evidence of what sank K-129. The submarine has sustained massive structural damage to its midsection.

JOHN CRAVEN

Chief Scientist

US Navy Special Projects Office:

It [the photographs of K-129] was deemed sufficiently high intelligence that it did not go through the normal intelligence review channels, but went directly to the top.

NARRATOR:

President Lyndon Johnson is one of the very few to see the photographs. He honors the crew [of the USS Halibut] with the Presidential Unit Citation, the highest award a submariner can receive. The irony is, not one of the men knows why he has been decorated. However, for Craven, the photos identifying K-129’s location, 400 miles south of its patrol area, confirms his suspicions. K-129 had been rogue. They also reveal something even more sinister.

JAMES REEB

US Navy Cryptographer

The photographs of the submarine that I saw laying on the bottom showed damage to tube number one with a wrecked missile kind of hanging out top. I think that tube number two, the hatch was open, but number three was closed.

NARRATOR:

The photos suggest the very real possibility that K-129 was in the process of firing a nuclear missile when it sank. And if it was, what was its intended target? And why did it fail?JOHN CRAVEN:

It was obviously an intelligence coup. And we came back and reported it to the highest levels of intelligence.

NARRATOR:

After seeing the photos, one thing becomes paramount to the newly-sworn-in president. Nixon wants to get his hands on K-129. Its treasure trove of Soviet weaponry and intelligence, along with evidence suggesting it was firing its missiles when it sank, could offer him the one thing he’s always wanted: To break the Soviets. He demands his forces raise the stricken sub, but the obstacles to doing it are enormous. And so are the consequences if they get caught…Because the project requires speed, and absolute secrecy, the president takes it away from the navy and hands it to the CIA.

The ballistic missile submarine arms race between the Soviet Union and the United States began in 1960 when the U.S. Navy’s first operational ballistic missile submarine USS George Washington (SSBN-598) sailed from Groton, Connecticut to Port Canaveral, Florida, where she loaded two Polaris missiles. USS George Washington then sailed off the coast of Cape Canaveral into the Atlantic Missile Test Range, and on July 20, 1960, carried out the first Polaris Missile launch from a submerged submarine.

Over half a century later, the ballistic missile submarine arms race between the Soviet Union (now known as the Russian Federation) and the United States returned to Port Canaveral when the Obama-Biden administration’s 2014 PROJECT PELICAN operation awarded a 35-year cargo container terminal lease at Florida’s Port Canaveral to UAE-based GULFTAINER.

GULFTAINER is the seaports management and logistics company co-owned by the Ruler of Sharjah, UAE and the brother and business partner of Dr. Jafar Dhia Jafar, the Soviet-trained mastermind of Saddam Hussein’s uranium enrichment and nuclear weapons programs.

Not only did Dr. Jafar receive technical assistance with his nuclear program from Soviet-Russian superspy Yevgeny ‘Bear In The Desert’ Primakov, the former Director of the KGB First Directorate who was deeply connected to Soviet submarine K-129, GULFTAINER also entered into a joint venture called GULFTAINER RUSSIAN TECHNOLOGIES with Russian state-owned enterprise ROSTEC. ROSTEC owns ROSOBORONEXPORT, the Russian weapons exporter that exports Russia’s Trojan Horse Club-K Container Missile launching System.

Russia’s Club-K Container Missile System launches Russian Kalibr cruise missiles capable of delivering nuclear, EMP, chemical, biological, and conventional payloads.

Putin, the life-long admirer of Andropov, the KGB boss who Sewell believes was behind K-129’s attempted nuclear strike on Pearl Harbor, personally oversaw the signing ceremony for GULFTAINER RUSSIAN TECHNOLOGIES, which was also attended by GULFTAINER executive Badr Jafar, Iraqi nuclear scientist Dr. Jafar Dhia Jafar’s nephew.

Hillary and Bill Clinton are connected not only to the URANIUM ONE deal, but also to GULFTAINER through Business Backs Education.

We reported in our May 24, 2015 Exposé “America’s Strategic Infrastructure Compromised: Did Clinton Pay-To-Play Arrangement Hand Over Port Container Operations Inside National Security Nexus To Wealthy Foreign Associates?”:

Badr Jafar, 35, is Managing Director of the Crescent Group, President of Crescent Petroleum and CEO of Crescent Enterprises, the parent of Gulftainer.

Majid co-Chairs, alongside former President Clinton, Business Backs Education, a United Nations UNESCO-run global educational campaign. The campaign is funded by the Varkey GEMS foundation, a contributor to the Clinton Global Initiative.

“The Varkey GEMS Foundation has helped to facilitate more than 2,300 commitments through the Clinton Global Initiative to date. Upon funding and implementation, these commitments will have a total value of over $70 billion.” – Varkey Foundation Website

Majid Jafar met with former President Bill Clinton and other global leaders, including the Director-General of UNESCO , at the Global Education and Skills Forum, held in Dubai from March 15-17, 2014.

A group photograph taken during the forum provides key evidence that Crescent executive Majid Jafar not only served as co-Chair of the Business Backs Education campaign alongside former President Bill Clinton, but also physically stood next to former President Clinton at a time when Gulftainer was secretly seeking to establish operations at Port Canaveral. That deal would soon require approval from Clinton’s long-time friend, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew…
